Regarding connections to your machine from outside:
You should be very concerned about security. It is best not to run telnet
or ftp daemons at all because passwords are sent as plain text that can be
sniffed. Run ssh and scp (ssh daemon) instead, and, if you want to be
extra-safe, use tcp wrappers to control access to sshd (this may mean
compiling your own sshd).
Regarding your ability to connect to other machines:
Can you get to the 'net at all? e.g., does your web browser work?
Does nslookup work? Is DNS configured?
