[MLUG] MRTG Question

My recent project is dealijng with MRTG, 
I've been having problems with MRTG working with a SNMP server.
Does linux have 1, It keeps saying it can not connect? 

Also what I recently worked on is suposed to get around the need 
for SNMP, wrote a C program that runs a few bash commands, that grabs a
line from ifconfig command, 2 lines, TX and RX, then writes 
"2086521 errors:0 dropped:0 ov" that to file and it uses scanf to find 
the 1st number in the file and prints TX and RX packets: to stdout. 

MRTG grabs the TX and RX numbers and graphs out the difference from the 2 
number from what it was to what they are now.
My question is is there an option that you have to include to get 
the real difference calculated so data that it is showing is true 
or not

when I send out a ping, it sends packets that should make TX peak sky
rocket. But it does not.

But when I use ping, The Graph will show it, It isn't as high as 
the ping result told me it should be.

MRTG is updating every 5 minutes, so there should be alot more than 
5 to 32 packets within the next 5 minutes. 

If I include bits in my option, then the average is 50 packets every 5
minutes, when listing to KPLA all day long on the internet.

Any Suggestions?
