Thanks to those who responded with suggestions about the dead hdd. It was
really dead. Turns out that I only lost 2 files of significance, and a
day's work had them rebuilt and running again.

I replaced the dead hdd with two, identical IDE drives. When I was ready to
install the OS, I took stock of what I really needed out of a *NIX
fileserver. I need a system that will file/print share, dial-up Internet
gateway for my LAN, firewall protection, and a rudimentary web server
behind the firewall (for development, experimentation purposes).

So, I opted to install e-smith 5.0 ... (www.e-smith.org). This is based on
RH 2.2.19 kernel that does exactly what I wanted and can do more, if I want
to configure it to do so. The system is maintained through a web front-end,
so the user/administrator does not need to know command line *NIX. I wanted
to test this, as I'd like to recommend it as an M$ alternative for small
office file/print share network servers.

I must say that installation was a breeze, configuration likewise. SAMBA,
gateway, and firewall configuration were equally smooth (www.grc.com
Shields Up/Test My Ports shows everything 'stealth'). Backups are easy to
another hdd on the network (Backup to desktop), or to a tape drive. The
e-smith software is not backed up, only the configuration files and any
data files on the system. Slick!

So, after a week ... hey, I'm keeping this running ... I'll put RH on
another computer on the network.
