Why such a weird system? It doesn't make any sense to me. If it's really
broken, you might just want to reinstall the system with straight Mandrake
8.1, since conflicting installs are probably the cause of the problem.

Is the fonts.dir file correct? Try temporarily removing the directory with
all your TTF fonts from the config file and make another directory with just
the bare minimum of fonts - arial, verdana, courier new, times new roman, and
add others only if these work. If they don't, something is pretty screwed up
with your system. Some fonts might prevent the fontserver from starting up.
You can check if it's running by running ps -aux. It will show the process
as xfs. If it isn't running, that's the problem.
Also, is the computer in X or text mode when it boots up? If it's in X but
it just shows an xterm, try starting kde by running startkde. It should
start up or give you an error. Also, what is it logged in as? Root? Does
it ask for a password?
