I have procmail called by my .forward file and I don't do the thing you're
asking about, but I think I read somewhere that procmail can do what you
want. I believe you can have procmail take an mbox file as input and
distribute the messages to folders according to rules in an rcfile. I
would also think that procmail can be used with fetchmail, but I haven't
tried that either.
I hope someone else knows the details.
