OK, for the benefit of those googling our archive:

I made my Trident TGUI9680 stop flickering with XFree86 4.1.0 by using
the following XF86Config "Device" section:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Trident TGUI9660"
    Driver "trident"
    Option "NoPciBurst" "on"
    Option "ShadowFB" "on"
EndSection

This still gives nice accelerated performance, compared to 3.3.6. Window
dragging not as smooth as with those options turned off, but at least
there's not snow on the screen while they're dragged.

I learned something else, too: If I used two Xservers, the one on :0 for
editing my config files and the one on :1 for testing the changes,
nothing at all will stop the flickering/snow. I had to kill ALL the
servers before the changes would show... Don't know why that's not
intuitive to me, but so much for THAT 1.5 hrs of my life.
