OK, so now I see that what you're talking about here are people who want
to become amateur sysadmins, so you can be pretty sure they are highly
motivated (and have pre-existing command-line tool knowledge).  My
previous post was about how to go about teaching the truly uninitiated,
which is very different.  Personally, I've run across many more of the
latter than the former.
