Out of office replies have their use... but they shouldn't be used with
mailing lists. At work I have to fire off questions quickly and it's good
to know that a person is completely out of the office and they usually tell
me when they will be back, that way I don't send any additional messages
their way.
IM's have their place, but I don't want to have to respond directly through
an IM client because I'm usually in the middle of something. With email, I
can respond later with something more thoughtout.
