howdy,

i dont really keep up with linux much anymore, but seeing Neil lately
reminded me i had something to share. anyone else got their hands on
kylix? it's basically the most mature visual development tool for linux
out there. uses delphi, which is pretty much like java programming-wise,
except it's compiled (go to www.borland.com for more details). there's a
promotion where the desktop developer version was "only" $200 so i
convinced the powers at be at work to purchase it. it's really too bad
that the release of k came out at the point where all the linux projects
are getting cut cause of economy, but imo it had a chance to bring linux
up to compete with windows as equals. i'll probably install it as soon
as i get another hd to put in my machine (nobody wants to sell something
5-20Gb in size?), and would be glad to do a presentation some time into
the fall semester.

i'd very much like to let someone pirate it off of me and have some fun
with it, but since this is work license, it's out of question. besides,
i kinda like borland for their commitment to linux. but if you can't
afford to shell out $200 out of sheer sympathy, borland has been
promising to release the freeware compiler with the visual component
library source code (kinda like widgets on drugs.. or equivalent to M$
MFC lib). therewill be no visual development environment, but i'm sure
within a short time someone will write a module for emacs that'll do
everything one may want and brew your coffee for you (wait it already
does that).

cheers,
paul/km
