[MLUG] Can't Ping within Hub; can from mlug

I installed Mandrake 8 on my desktop and it comes with the VNC server,
which I enabled. My laptop is connected to the desktop via a Hub, which is
also connected to a @home cable modem. Each computer has its own IP
address from @home. The desktop dual-boots, and the windows shares work
fine.

However, its like that don't exist to each other when in Linux. I can't
ping the linux desktop from my windows laptop or visa versa. But I can
ping the linux desktop and the laptop from the MLUG server. I can login to
the linux desktop via SSH from MLUG, but not from the laptop.

Why?
