While Neil and I have had our disagreements in the past on this list, I
support this post 110%. MLUG is precisely the sum of it's members
participation. If you don't feel that MLUG is meeting your expectations,
then you may need to reevaluate how much YOU'RE devoting to making MLUG
better. Pointing fingers at people who devote a significant portion of their
time, who could quite easily spend that time with their families, or
studying, or whatever, and saying that they should be "more professional" is
totally uncalled for. Most of the people you're unknowingly talking about
ARE professionals, both here in Columbia, and far away. D- for "Plays well
with others"....

Subject: Re: [MLUG] MLUG Down Time
You know, if MLUG could raise some real funds, we could get a real server.
There's currently 193 members. If everyone threw $20 at MLUG, we could
afford a nice server for around $3,860. Even a $10 donation would give us
$1,930, and that's still enough to buy enough parts on Pricewatch to build
a killer server.
If you really like MLUG that much, then contribute. If you're a freerider,
that isn't a problem, however, don't send e-mails to more.net, former
officers, and please, don't whine about how MLUG members need to be more
professional. We try. We're only human, and we aren't getting paid for
this. If you would like to put MLUG admins on salary like, say, $15/hour,
you can bark at us for our lack of professionalism. Until then, knock off
this kind of trolling:
"but if these folks are serious about becoming professionals someday then
they should start with treating the Mlug server in a professional way
regarding up time and support"
You know who you are, and you really owe MLUG admins an apology. That was
coarse, unthoughtful, and unnecessary. That's the best way to motivate
MLUG admins, complain about their *volunteer* work until they give up.
As of now, we're just a bunch of geeks trying to have fun with Linux and
Open Source software.
I hope everyone can understand that, and not take all this so
seriously. Your life will not end because MLUG is down for three days. If
MLUG means that much to you, buy us a better server with UPS, SCSI, and
gigabit cards in a rackmount system. Until then, the SGI p733 with two 20
GB IDE disks that we're borrowing from IATS will remain as our
server.
I am Jack's offline server,
Neil
