No, it doesn't emulate a virtual machine. Instead, it uses windows'
mechanisms to load a special (windows) graphics driver which outputs stuff to
X instead of a graphics card. It also has similar drivers for filesystems
and sound. Because, it works a thousand times faster than vmware because it
doesn't need to emulate anything; it just runs windows on the existing
hardware. Furthermore, it boots about 5 times faster than windows on the
same system, because it uses linux's more efficient filesystem and disk
access driver instead of the crappy dos one.
