Yes, these are written in C. What I did is to get the existing
xlock program, look at the code for another of the modes, copy
it across, and then make the appropriate changes. The program
already does a lot for you - setting up the window, etc.
I knew next to nothing about X programming before I started, and
learned most of it by reading other modes.
Also, I found the xlock community very helpful it teaching me
things. David Bagley (the maintainer of xlock) was very nice.
Let me say some more. The original mode I wrote was the simulation
of 2D fluids. I wrote it in OpenGL, because that was the only
graphics programming I knew. I submitted this stand alone program
to the xlock community, more as a concept than anything else. They
helped me rewrite it without OpenGL, and now it is a part of xlock.
