Actually, I think that the true spam, like the dorky chain-letter
gas-price thing should go to the shredder. But there does seem to be some
confusion about what is best for the discussion versus members list.
Looking back at April, it looks like more people were following the policy
that if the topic doesn't prominently mention "Linux" or "BSD", then it
should go to discussion. That was obviously the right decision for
threads on "Marriage", "MU policy" and "Morals, Payroll, and Rich
Bastards", but less clearly right for other things, possibly including the
"broadband besides dsl or cable" thread that swallowed the "@home outage
thread".
And you know what? This is always going to happen. But the MLUG archives
on the web are pretty decent, so here's what I propose:
One daily post to "members" that just gives the title and number of
posts on each of the previous day's threads on "discussion".
That way, you only lose a bit of timeliness on some threads, and can be
alerted to the fact that an Open GL thread (say) popped up on discussion.
The number of posts is key, though, since most threads here either devolve
to discsussion quality or change topic completely after, say, 10 posts.
