It's probably your XF86Config-4 file vs maybe XF86Config file
Mandrake 8 definitely uses X4.  Either way, it's probably a problem with
your frequency settings. 
Figure out which file you are using - you can tell by which way X is
linked in the /etc/X11/ directory - and then modify that file.  Set it
to whatever your monitor can handle.
