I use bash for a shell. I use Debian 2.2r2 linux. I have Perl 5.005. The
one liner ran with no errors other than it would not remove the users record
from the users file.

No problem. Now, let's figure out why my version didn't work for you.
That's a pretty good way to learn. What shell do you use and what do you
get in response when you run that perl command?
