k, I've investigated this for several days, but I'm at a loss

I have a machine that ran fine for over a month until I put ipaudit and mrtg
on it. Now every few minutes it is reporting "card reports no resources".
The machine has 2 eepro100 cards. All the information I've found points to
either changing the RX_ & TX_RING_SIZE in the driver or a hardware bug.

My question is: I've made the changes to the eepro100.c, do I have to
recompile the whole kernel (default RH 6.2 install, I don't know if this
module was loadable or compiled into the kernel) or can I compile (make,
gcc, ??) this and copy it into /lib/modules?

Since ipaudit runs as ipaudit, and I didn't have ipaudit's mail coming to me
until yesterday, I just discovered these errors:
$IP_DIR/ipaudit died prematurely
ipaudit: Trouble opening <eth0>, msg="socket: Operation not permitted" (Do
you need root?)
/home/ipaudit/raw/30min/2001-03-15-08:00.raw: No such file or directory
/home/ipaudit/data/30min/2001-03-15-08:00.txt: No such file or directory

from logcheck:

Mar 13 00:15:24 tweety last message repeated 28 times
Mar 13 00:20:31 tweety last message repeated 25 times

Mar 13 01:00:02 tweety kernel: device eth0 left promiscuous mode
Mar 13 01:00:02 tweety kernel: device eth0 entered promiscuous mode

I'm not sure if they are related or not...but any help would be appreciated
(although I am considering wiping this box and trying out e-smith distro)
