Searching at google.missouri.edu with "beep pc speaker linux" turns up lots
of hits where people have the opposite problem -- the Sound HOW-TO
recommends "oplbeep" and "beep" as two options for getting the sound card to
do the job instead of the speaker -- I wonder if you aren't running something
that's providing this service which you don't want.
