*ABSOLUTELY* worth $99!
This is a ridiculously low price for a very capable piece of hardware. That
is, if you are a hacker-type. If you are, Dreamcast could be even more sexy
than the iOpener was.
Consider this - a development kit for the SH-4 from Hitachi is gonna cost a
guy a big chunk of change (I'm guessing $700-800, maybe > $1000?) and will
probably only include a board, processor, and some assorted RAM/ROM?
What you're getting with a Dreamcast is not only an SH-4, but *ALSO* a board
with 16MB RAM, a Yamaha AICA ARM-based sound engine, a very capable NEC
PowerVR 3D graphics processor, all kinds of stuff hanging off the MAPLE bus,
AND a GD-ROM (that can play CDs/CD-Rs). Adding to the fun is the fact that
the boys in the backroom have already put C libraries (and even a
pseudo-microkernel OS) together to support lots of the hardware AND
GCC/bintools/etc. all work great. There's even a guy that's built an
ISA/IDE interface.
Oh, and I can upload programs at 100Mb/s over the Ethernet port :)
When you look at it that way, $99 is a steal. It's also why SEGA thinks
they can make money selling the DC as an embedded platform. Things will get
really interesting when the Linux port is in a usable state.
I'm buying 2 more on the 4th when the prices drop...I plan to put one in my
truck and use it for mp3 audio and other misc. stuff.
