Well, I thought the same thing, and tried that.  No luck.  The reason why I
set them to 644 was because my ethernet interface config file (ifcfg-eth0)
is set to 644.

Um, I think the perms need to be 755.
644 was rw r--r-- permissions, which does not include execute....
