Well MAME is an emulator, I'm more wanting to create a RAD/IDE-type game
creation suite. The benefits of having such a suite would be quicker
development, fewer bugs, cross-platform portability, module design, language
independance, easier to work with, etc. The basic premise is that 95% of
games are based on pre-existing engines with minimal changes so that if you
modulized the various parts of the engines and package the game logic
outside the executable that you can attain the before mentioned goals.

Example modules might fall under several types such as: networking, display,
input, maping, save/load games, or AI with modules being things such as 3D
rendering engines, sound processing engines, logic templates for shooters or
scrollers or card games or whatever.

Rather than try to code everything myself I think it'd be best to create the
module structure and allow others to take bits from open sourced games and
libraries and make them into modules. Also I'd want to create a simple
language that could be used to define the game logic from these modules and
whatever graphics, sounds, maps, and other data are included. Quite possibly
an IDE front-end could be developed to allow the game logic to be plugged
together like legos and have data packed and so forth.

This approach will of course not be likely to create any games that are
totally original unless the creator chooses to build their engine as
modules. The goal is mainly to create a lot of quality games in a short time
and to give those who can create story lines and artwork and such the
ability to add to the community without reinventing the wheel each time.
