[UUG/MLUG] Modem woes

I decided to bump up to 2.2.14 this afternoon from 2.2.12...

After I built the new kernel I went ahead and grabbed the newest pcmcia
card services... (3.1.8) and built it.

After I rebooted I had realized I did something dumb - I forgot to rerun
lilo...

So I was still running 2.2.12.. I tried connecting to the internet and
nothing happened.. the ppp log said "Input/Output error"   I was really
confused... I hadn't done anything to mess with my modem, i was still
running 2.2.12!

So I then ran lilo and booted into 2.2.14 - I had the same problem, no
internet connection.  So I ran cardctl ident to make sure the pcmcia
modem was still being detected.. it was... so I tried running wvdialconf
and it couldn't detect the modem...

So I tried downgrading to pcmcia 3.0.14 still no luck..

I don't understand what could have caused all these problems, if I boot
off 2.2.12 shouldn't it use the old pcmcia package?

I'm not sure what I should take as a next step in debugging this
thing...

Any suggestions appreciated..
