Its easier to do
ESC-x
replace-string
enter the string you want to replace
enter the replacement string
You can also do
ESC-%
enter the string you want to replace
enter the replacement string
then answer y or n for each occurance....
Both of these start from the current position of the cursor though.
So it wont replace everything above the cursor.
