Way back in the olden days when 1.08GB drives cost $500, I bought one. Put it
in a 486 (old even for then) which of course could only read 500MB. I ended
up putting dos/windoze on about 300MB without any overlay software, and put
Linux on the rest.
Linux was very happy talking directly to the hardware and DOS was as happy as
DOS gets talking to the bios.
I don't know if this trick will work on the larger drives, but Linux should
work with the overlay software as long as you are careful with your lilo.
Lilo will overwrite the boot sector that contains the overlay boot information
and will screw you badly.
