None This Month - Presentation Starts Early
Abstract:
Due to the expected length of the presentation panel we have decided to
forego our usual monthly tutorial in favor of allowing more time for the
main topic.
Presentation
High Speed Home Internet Access by a panel of five
Abstract:
BROADBAND ISP SERVICE TO YOUR HOUSE. Conventional modems have reached their
speed limit but now new technologies have become available :such as
satellite (ex. Direct PC), aDSL and sDSL on your old phone lines, wireless
(radio/microwave), and cable modems. 5 vendors, each representing a
technology, will participate in a panel discussion and question period to
compare their advantages.
Panel Companies:
Primary Phonix Charter Worknet Hughes
For more info contact Gary Meyer by sending mailto:EMAIL:PROTECTED .
[ Editor's Notes:
The October 1999 issue of Scientific America does a feature article on
exactly our topics. They have a couple of pages on EACH of the technologies.
So, if anyone wants to do their homework and read up before the meeting, see
your friendly neighborhood public library.
Monday 28 Nov
General Motors announced that it was considering selling part of the 67%
interest they own in Hughes Electronics. Hughes Electronics is the parent of
Hughes Network (Direct TV & Direct PC among other offerings), Hughes
Satellite (builds the birds), and majority owner of PanAm Sat (opertes
satellites). GM stock rose after the announcement.
Tues 29 Nov
There is a petition being circulated in the City of St.L. to overturn the
recently signed law requiring the cable operator (currently AT&T) to provide
equal service to competing ISPs.

*4 attendees requested to be subsribed to our email newsletter.
Results of each question on our OPTIONAL survey/questionaire:

*5 - - Excellent
*9 - - Good
*3 - - Fair
*2 - - Leaving, can't wait.
*1 - - No response to question.
SLUUG COMMENTS:
*Handled complicated topic well.
*A log of good discussion, very interesting.
*Tutorial did not have enough time for big topic.
*Tutorial had good discussion and no consensus. Presentation scope was bad.
*Tutorial session was very interesting but didn't really give enough
background for dealing with the presentation. It wasn't really a tutorial.
SLUUG Linux Special Interest Group meeting on 18 November 1999:
*60 Actual head count.
*29 Attendance & survey sheets were turned in.
*13 attendees requested to be subsribed to our email newsletter.
Results of each question on our OPTIONAL survey/questionaire:

*21 - - Excellent
*2 - - Good
*6 - - No response to question.
2. What would you like to see.
*Expert help sessions for newbies
*A walk thru of the init process.
*In depth discussion of kernel re-building

Linux SIG COMMENTS:
*Best presentation in years.
*This guy is funny. He should try PKO!
*Humerous and remanicent of my early Linux days.
*Perhaps a little more explanation for those just learing. Thanks.
*This was great! Thanks for relating the experience and putting up with our
kidding. We will take the [speakers] suggestion to heart.
*Need to make a HTML file that has meeting times, mainling lists, web
addresses, etc. to display at the begining of each meeting. Make one each
for Windoze diskette and Linux diskette.
OBSERVATIONS:
This was was an excellent turn out with 13 requests for SLUUG newsletter.
Wave Technologies donation of over 50 copies of Calderia 2.2 was the best
give away feeding frenzy in months.
OPINION:
We might get more attendance sheets returned if we would tie them to the
giveaways; but, with 50 copies of anything it would be even more frantic.

urged to leave. Subject matter will be refereed by Rich Seibel.

Almost Free Books submitted by Editor
Card holders can request items the St. Louis County Library should acquire,
and suggest items currently not owned by the library
Use this site to request items that are not in the catalog or titles that
are on order.
http://www.slcl.lib.mo.us/iii/on_order_holds.htm
or if you prefer: http://199.181.178.210/
They have gotten four of the six books that I'v requested in the last two
months. Linux books seem to be high interest, so not a problem. They
apparently will usually not order any books that have tear out sections in
them.
Non-Linux, Unix specific books above a certain price will require more
demand before they start to order them. So, start requesting!
