Here's a question:

What does nedit do that emacs doesn't do?

Emacs is highly flexible and can probably do anything you can think of.
It also has html-editing modes that make html easier to work with. I
don't understand the aversion to emacs. Jon King is right. It is easy to
use emacs and it allows you to do so much more than other editors.

In addition, the cursor movement keys in emacs are now standard and are
used, for example, in the tcsh shell.

Another question:

Why use pico when you have emacs?

I understand that it might take a little while to get started on emacs,
but it is so worthwhile that I could never recommend pico to
anyone. Unless you launch pico with the right command line arguments, it
will wrap lines (adding newline characters that you don't want) after 74
characters. You can't even move back a word at a time in pico. Pico is
just a broken copy of an early version of emacs.
