Sounds video related to me. If you must have higher res text mode (which
I understand as I keep mine at 800x600 :), I would recommend compiling a
kernel with fbdev support. I thnk the S3 will only be supported with the
vesa driver which requires a vesa 2.0 video bios. Also, you will not be
able to switch modes except at boot time as this requires a real mode bios
call.
