Hello, if you don't recognize the name, it's because I'm new to
Linux and MLUG, so bear with me.
I have an internal 3Com (and I say 3Com instead of USR because the only
place the USR name is printed is on the box.) 56K Faxmodem. It is
absolutely, positively, not a softmodem. However, it is jumperless.
About this fact I am not well pleased, saith the Lord.
Now, the modem uses resources as follows: It is on com 2 (cua1,
yes?), it uses irq 3, it uses i/o 02F8h-02FFh. I have, I believe, used
isapnp correctly to set it up. Now, I have RedHat 5.2, with KDE 1.1
installed. I have tried to set up the modem with kppp, but each time I
implore it to connect me, it informs me the modem is busy. In addition,
none of the other devices (/dev/modem /dev/ttys1, et cetera) work
either. However, I only get the "modem is busy" message from /dev/cua1
and /dev/modem. This, it seems to me, indicates that it knows the modem
is on cua1, but can't use it for some other reason. I've already
commented out the lock in the /etc/ppp blah, blah, blah file. Any
suggestions. I've read them modem How-to and found it useless. The
same goes for the ppp How-to. I've seen suggestions of setting it up
with the networking configuration tool in the control panel, but I
understand this does not support PAP. Any suggestions, questions,
comments? Remember, no instruction is too precise. Treat me as though
I were an old person who still complains that "it were a darn sight
better before that galldang eelektristy."
thanks,
Ryan Gaul
