Running lilo would restore your master boot record (assuming your
/etc/lilo.conf is still around), but if you've lost anything on your root
partition, it will still be gone. And if your kernel is gone (you
mentioned it was), lilo will fail. Your best bet might be to just
re-install the base system, if that's possible.
