Yes, we in Mathematics have quite a hard time with this when we send
papers to each other. Often we have lines beginning with From. When
we pass the papers through TeX, the extra > becomes some kind of
upside down question mark.
By the way, the best way to download your email from a pop client is
using fetchmail. It is very easy to set up and use.
