Is anyone out there familiar with mail utilities?

I wanted to write a Java program that would grab my mail file from showme,
download it to the local machine, and parse out the individual mail
messages...kind of a popmail client, I guess. Anyway, I can't figure out
how a mail reader separates the messages. Performing 'od -hc username |
more' in /var/spool/mail/ shows that the only separation between messages
is "\n\n". Not exactly a great delimiter, huh?

Is there more logic involved? For instance, searching for "\n\nFrom"
would be a little better, but certainly not perfect. Or, is there another
file I need to look at or something?
