Hrmm... we had this problem under IRIX not to long ago, and it turned out
to be just a lock file on the mail box that wasn't getting cleared or the
ownership had changed in the lock creation process.
Take a look in /var/spool/mail for lock files on a file (sometimes called
<username>.lock by the Washington IMAP programs).
