He thinks it will come down to how well Obama will attract the working class white voter.
I think this is his achilles heal as well. It will be interesting to see how that turns out.
One thing not mentioned by Krugman that could be huge: Obama's choice of running mate. I think Hillary is locking herself out of contention with her recent weirdness. How about John Edwards? I would like that. Edwards is very concerned about the problems of working-class Americans. He's the right age for the job. He can help in the south.
Edwards would be a mistake, he pays a lot of lip service about helping the working class, but all too often he comes away as an elitist and out of touch. He can help in the South in some areas, but I do not think he brings anything to that table that Obama cannot handle on his own.
No, I am guessing that Obama would likely go with a more conservative democrat. None come to mind immediately, but I would expect him to choose someone with some governor experience. I don't think you will see him pull in a representative or a senator to be his running mate unless they have governor background. I guess if I were to go out on a limb, someone in the vien of a Zell Miller would be the most obvious choice to me. Obama needs to bring someone in with more experience and respect than himself. Miller is a southern conservative democrat and has lots of experience, though he might be considered too old at 76.
