To be fair, you should probably include the time you need to spend
waiting for the train. Also, unless you ride your bike to the train
(you can take it with you!), the time it takes you to get to the train
station.(Bike time I would deduct from the expected exercise time
budget, or split it between exercise and transportation.)

Don't get me wrong, I think Caltrain is great. I just want the
comparison to be fair.

Regular unleaded was over $4 per gallon. The one-way ticket between
adjacent zones was $4, not including parking. Depending on your
commute and whether you can afford to ditch a car completely and
whether your employer will at least partially re-imburse, you can go
anywhere between saving a lot of money to probably about breaking
even. That's not counting the opportunity cost of either traffic or
waiting for a train, but you could factor those things in, too.

I know I personally save over $3000 in cash outlays every year with my
bicycle/bus strategy in the DC suburbs.
