The Revolution was a very interesting war. Without France, the British
disaster at Yorktown could not have happened. We arguably could have
eventually won by other means, but that battle ended the war
essentially right away. The war was not popular in England, and news
that Cornwallis had been forced to surrender his 10000 men, combined
with a *unique* defeat of a British fleet at the hands of the French
led Parliament to push for an end to the war. Note that the British
continued to occupy many places, including New York City, until they
withdrew after the peace treaty.
jking.
