I think it was because he annoyed a lot of Vietnam veterans. In
particular, his denunciations of the war and claims of atrocities,
which he made soon after he came back, came across as dishonest.
I think some servicement felt betrayed. But the Swift Boat thing was a
pack of lies put together by people who didn't know Kerry. I would find
it hard to believe that there were any Democrats behind that ad.
Kerry's war record was excellent and Bush's was lousy and that was why
Kerry was attacked on his military service record. They had to lie
because the truth was all good for Kerry.
I honestly don't have any real idea what the truth was in this instance.
The media is too blunt of an instrument, and too swayed by vested
interests, to be an accurate tool for figuring this one out.
