I think you're on to him!
He has been known as somewhat of a maverick and he has said that he
plans to only serve one term. To me that means he is going to be more
interested in protecting his legacy early on and that will likely mean
selling out republican ideals in order to further his legacy. I just
don't trust that he will make wise and sound decisions and he is known
for selling out republicans.
I agree that promoting Republican ideals is bad for a president's legacy
-- those ideals have become really sick and twisted and they are causing
enormous damage. I also agree that he'll do whatever the hell he wants to
do if he wins because he doesn't want a second term.
Now of course he is more aligned with me than the democrats are. He
aligns with me on gun control, he has flipped on taxes, but now says he
wants to make the tax cuts permanent so that is a good thing. I think he
is more fiscally conservative than Bush, (right now Teddy Kennedy seems
more conservative than Bush) and certainly more fiscally conservative
than either Barak or Hilary. I also do believe, whether it means
continuing the war or not, than McCain is going to be better at
protecting the US soil than either of the democratic candidates.
The thing is, being "hawkish" might create more enemies than it defeats.
Once someone is in the US, he can easily kill dozens of people if he wants
to (e.g., buy a gun, go to a crowded movie theater). So one part of our
strategy should be to work on our PR in regions that are loaded with
hostile would-be terrorists. Is McCain the man for that job? I think
not, but I might find out.
