My big fear is that you could easily create stuff that no human could
play in person. It wouldn't be less musical, but it would make live
performances seem less special. I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Interestingly enough I was just thinking the same thing. You sure could create music in this fashion, but some of the changes they made on the video only the most talented of guitarists could play with such precision.

I kind of think we have already reached this in many ways. Now a vocal performance on a recording is more patched together using pitch correction techniques than ever before. In the days when I was in the studio it was much more difficult I think. The guy that sings in my band now does a lot of vocal work and they use pitch correction all the time. The thought is to correct the pitch and make it perfect as quickly as possible in order to save money recording the track.

I have mixed opinions on it. On the one hand I like using new technologies that make my life easier. Certainly the non-linear format of digital audio editing saves tons of time from waiting for tape to rewind and this is good. Effects plugins and being able to mix multitrack recordings precisely the way you want them and then export to final stereo file is so much nicer than it was in the days of having 4 engineers riding the faders. I am still a traditionalist when it comes to recording the feeling of the band, complete with the off timing items and the occasional inaccuracies.
