I agree with you that internal enforcement needs to happen, but since NO

Nothing. There's always false promises, false hope, expensive and useless
expenditures, fake aggressive maneuvers using armed forces that never
shoot anyone, stuff like that.
I wouldn't give up on enforcement. What you have to do is get smart about
the deception and push for enforcement. If you are willing to accept a
fence instead of a real effort to stop illegal immigration, you'll get a
fence and a bunch of illegal immigrants.
The majority of people agree that something has to be done. The backlash
on McCain has a lot to do with his "Amnesty" bill. I know, I know, there
is an argument whether it was amnesty or not, but the republican base
thought it was and that is what matters to McCain.
McCain wanted the Bush plan on immigration. Same for Kennedy. So I think
this was the most recent issue that really got the talk radio guys on
McCain's ass.
Funny that everyone pretends to be Ronald Reagan, but is anyone saying
that they want to do what Reagan did and give amnesty to illegal
immigrants? I guess not.
Conservatives were never about taxing people to pay for spending. They
were more about controlling spending so people did not have to be taxed.
Probably at some point in history, but now the Republicans who call
themselves conservatives are into blowing money like drunken sailors on
shore leave.
I agree with McCain on a great many issues, and even more now that he is
running for President and has flipped on a lot of things he has said in
the past. He voted against the tax cuts, but now he says they should be
extended.
And how will he pay for this lost revenue by reducing spending (during
wartime!)? He won't. So he should raise taxes if he had any sense.
During an election year, everyone pretends to have a magic wand. Our
biggest problem is that people are dull enough that they vote for people
who promise things that cannot be delivered. You can't have high
spending, low taxes and a balanced budget. But let's just say that we can
until we've won the election, and then there's another election, and so
on.
He had a bill that he tried to get through that was essentially amnesty,
or at least a great many people thought it was. Many republicans feel
that McCain introduced that bill to maintain the status quo, knowing
that nothing would be passed. Ultimately, he now says he is against the
very concepts that were part of his bill. That concerns me a little.
Because he's lying? You can't believe politicians during election
campaigning. You have to look things up.
I thought Kerry was running an honest campaign, but then during one debate
he started saying things about Bush that I thought were not credible. I
looked them up and they were a bunch of lies. That disappointed me, but
the polls showed that viewers thought it was Kerry's best debate
performance and they said he had won handily!! Bush looked really stunned
by the crazy things Kerry was saying about him and that probably hurt
Bush. The moral of that story is: Lying works.
So never believe these people!
Ultimately a McCain presidency would be better than a Clinton presidency
in my book, and probably better than an Obama presidency. I also believe
that if he is the candidate, most republicans who do not like him will
hold their nose and vote for him anyway.
Or there will be a third-party candidate.
