I don't want to say that Vista can currently hold a match to XP, but
it does make a good operating system. I would like to comment that
most people I have talked to are only having problems with unsupported
devices or software. A lot of these devices or software that people
are trying to use on Vista are pre-XP or just did not have drivers for
Vista when they purchased their Vista machine. Many companies did not
have Vista drivers out for older devices (even devices designed to
work with XP). Most people are very quick to 'jump on the band wagon'
when one thing does not work for them. I work at Best Buy and talk to
people about Vista on a daily basis and the consensus I hear is 'Vista
is horrible, nothing works!'... I ask what does not work? They
respond with something along the lines of 'I tried to install my
printer and it didn't install'. Well HP, Brother, Kodak, etc... did
not start shipping their printers with Vista drivers for months. We
get this with many other devices as well. Even before these companies
started shipping a disc with drivers with the product, they put a
simple piece of paper in the product saying 'Visit our website
yyyy.com/vista and download your drivers if you have Vista'. And I
always ask what else doesn't work and most of the time they only had
one problem, but heard from other people that Vista was a creation
from the devil, once their one problem is solved they don't seem to
have problems with it any more. Now that Vista drivers are shipping
with just about all the products that BBY carries, we are back to
fixing the usual problems just like XP; malware, BSODs, 'I didn't
change anything and now it doesn't work', driver/software installs....
everything that we heard for XP is now the same thing we hear for
Vista, nothing new. Vista had a rough start I think because of issues
like drivers and UAC is a problem every once in a while with a
particular program, but if the user would fire up google and search
(like we do when someone asks 'why doesn't this run'), generally the
first page or so has a resolution.

I run Vista on two machines at my house. Both are Intel packages from
this year and the previous, so one Intel Quad Core and the other an
Intel Core2 Duo. The Core2 has Vista 64-bit and the other Vista
32-bit, both Ultimate. I have had no problems and I can say, like
most people reading this, that I do quite a few things that the usual
user does not venture into or even crosses their mind. Drivers have
not been an issue except I have one IR remote that the receiver does
not have 64-bit driver (has a 32-bit), but that was months ago and I
found a resolution to my need instead of using my ancient receiver,
not to mention that the receiver is roughly 6 years old.

I would say for 99% of the consumers out there, Vista works fine, it
just takes a bit more brain usage to get the job done, simply because
it is something new. When I started using Ubuntu, it took me days
just to figure out how to get my Logitech MX Revolution mouse to work
and I still fight with network dropping signal in low signal areas
where XP picks it with no problems. Vista has the compatibility that
most people seek, most problems have a resolution, one just needs to
look. No, it isn't plug and play like XP, but give it time.
