I have a 1080i 42" plasma from Panasonic. It looks great, and I paid $1200 for it a year ago.
I can say that non-HD signals suck on the thing, after watching in HD, it is very hard to watch something not in HD, I don't even bother going to those channels anymore. Fortunately Direct TV has a great number of HD channels and I really do not watch a lot of TV anyway.

I was expecting the next line to be "and you, sir, are no Dave Pogue!"
;-)

Thanks for all of the excellent info, which all makes perfect sense. Now,
unfortunately, I am confused again about what to choose. Fortunately, I'm
not really in a hurry to buy a new set because my old-fashioned flatscreen
is still doing a nice job.
You are right that I will enjoy Blu-Ray someday. It's pretty amazing to
watch. I'm not in a hurry to get addicted to the next big thing though.
Another interesting point made in Pogue's article is that about 50% of
HDTV owners don't have an HDTV signal and probably half of them are not
aware of that. Also, they say that ordinary signal looks worse on HDTV
than on ordinary TV. Sucks to be one of those people!
