Unless the war turns sour again before the election, I do not think it is going to be as important as everyone thinks it is.

 

Last night during the democratic debate they had a poll up on what items people think are the most important. It appears people are much more concerned about health care and the economy than they are the war in Iraq. Economy was 42% and health care was 34%. THe Iraq war was at 10%. I do not know how scientific it was, but those were telling numbers.

 

The only two candidates running that can prop themselves up on being anti-war is Obama and Paul. Obama has a shot at getting nominated though I still think he is going to lose to Hilary. Paul? Sorry, it is honorable that he has rabid supporters, but he is going to lose.

Because I disagree with probably 95% of the substantive things he
says. Honestly, people, he's an Old School States Right kind of guy
who thinks the world is a lot simpler than it really is. Anybody who
says "We need to abolish the IRS" is generally just foaming at the
mouth. He is ill-informed at best on issues in science and strikes me
as somebody who will show no flexibility, sophistication, or
understanding of such things in the future.

He is, was, and presumably always will be against the Iraq War, and he
is (admirably) very clear and consistent about this. Republican
candidates as a whole have put themselves in a very bad position on
this question so far (as a political point) because the war is
incredibly unpopular and they have to (in the primaries) fall over
each other praising our foreign policy in the primaries to get votes
from a "base" which is almost certainly too small (by itself) to get
them elected in November. Ron Paul has been a big beneficiary of that.

I will admit that I do have my prejudices here. I really do not think
there is much chance that a back-bench Texas Republican congressman is
likely to be the most qualified person to hold the office of the
presidency. That's just my prior. Nothing I have heard since does much
to advance his case with me.

And those, I hope, will be the last words I post on the subject.
