By contrast, why I have found is that Mike's arguments tend toward the
following:
"So what you're saying is <gross exaggeration of what you said>"
"That's exactly the kind of thing that a <attack the speaker>"
"You obviously don't know what you're talking about"
"You're wrong, and furthermore, <insert entirely new topic>"
These are all logically flawed debate tactics used to divert and
distract while discrediting your opponent rather than sticking to topic
or presenting any actual facts or evidence. The majority of Mike's
arguments - in my experience - have fallen into these categories (or
similar), so much so that it isn't worth my time to try to find those
few gems, which are few and far between.
I can get the same intellectual stimulation from other intelligent
people in far less time, with far less effort, and without being
insulted along the way. I rarely have time to read MLUG as it is
without having to wade through his crap. What's even worse is that he
then goads other people into doing the SAME THINGS, and I still see
*those* replies, which I *still* have to wade through if I'm at all
interested in a thread.
It's to the point that I have considered unsubscribing several times,
but haven't just because I'm too lazy to actually do it, plus I still
sometimes get something out of the top few posts from others, before the
discussion degenerates.
But it's so old and constant an issue that it doesn't even make me angry
any more. It just makes me sad. But it is what it is. I can't change
it, but I don't have to suffer from it, and I won't sugar-coat it just
because it isn't nice. He's pushed me much too far to deserve that sort
of consideration.
