Glorious. My chunk of NIH upgraded to Office 2007 last night, so we
get the brand new candy-colored version of Office. To be honest, I
think the new layout for Word (in particular) is a big improvement.

But I have a major, major, *major* problem. What had made Word
tolerable for me was the glorious Vbacs package which provides
emacs-style keybindings to Word. The good news is that this still
works just fine in Word 2007. The truly horrible and bad news is that
Vbacs does *not* work in Outlook, because the Outlook editor, which
now *has* to be Word 2007 and nothing else, doesn't bother to read the
contents of the Word StartUp folder when it fires up to edit a
message. So, in other words, all your carefully crafted word macros
appear to be junk in Outlook.

This is really stupid, in my opinion. One known workaround is to use a
package called AutoHotkey with somebody's home-rolled emacs
replacement macros. The problem there is that this is an actual
executable that has to install itself on your system, and we don't
have permissions to do that.

So what I guess I am looking for is any way to get Outlook 2007 either
to pay attention to the Start Up folder or some other reachable
location for me to put Vbacs into so that it will auto-run, or,
failing that, some way to implement emacs-style keybindings in
Outlook.

This is really a desperate situation, people. Any advice you have
short of changing jobs would be really helpful. Note that there are
some things (e.g., getting permission to do things other NIH employees
aren't allowed to do) that are off the table here.

Thanks.

jking
