I built everything by hand. Yes, even the neck. Pre-built necks are anywhere from $250 - $500, but I was looking for something very specific in regards to scale and of course it had to be a five string. I had some quotes of up to $750 to build the neck.

 

Interestingly enough, the hardest thing on the whole instrument was finishing the guitar, both from a paint point of view and the leveling of the neck and frets. A job, that honestly is still not quite complete.

Very interesting.  So it was $300 for the pickups.  Strings cost $45.
Bass strings are pricey!

Did you build the neck?  That has to be the hard part if you did that.
You can buy a neck already fretted, or at least the fingerboard.  That
would probably have cut out quite a few hours of work.  I'm sure you
wanted to build the whole thing (which is a really cool thing to do), but
for those who don't mind cutting corners, that's where I'd cut one.

Your bass looks really nice, Vern, and I'll bet it sounds amazing!
