You're right. The Blu-ray group started with nine leading electronic
companies: Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi,
Sharp, Samsung and Sony; but other companies signed on including Apple,
TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. and
Universal Music Group. At the moment there are more than 250 members and
supporters of the Association.
So history is not repeating itself to the degree that I thought it was.
The DVD Forum has 195 registered members, but note that some of the
founding members of the DVD Forum are the same as the founding members of
the Blu-ray Association.
It seems that right now the two formats are running neck and neck in terms
of number of discs released -- about 325 discs for each type.
