This is going to be a really tough one to call, and we might not have
to call it in the end because I believe dual-format players are being
developed. The relevant data I have seen include:
1) So far, Blu ray has outsold HD DVD by about 2:1.
2) HD DVD is apparently the early choice of the porn industry.
3) Pixar is releasing movies on Blu ray, as is (I believe) the rest of Disney.
4) Xbox 360 features an HD DVD player.
5) PS3 supports Blu Ray.
6) burners for either format are still very expensive.
7) HD DVD players are so far cheaper than Blu ray, but I wouldn't want
to predict what will happen this Christmas season.
I think it's pretty clear that any technical difference in the format
won't really make any difference in adoption rates at this point. I
think the two strongest drivers here are the Xbox 360 and
Pixar/Disney, and they point in opposite directions.
