One can see the guitar influence on her solos. As a bassist first and foremost this kind of bugs me a little. She is a very good player, running through penatonic scales as quickly as the best of them. I will admit her style of playing appeals to me more than a slap player would.

It is not so astonishing that she can play like this if she played guitar first, it is not that much of a switch, but once a guitarist always a guitarist and I would be interested in hearing how she actually plays in the grove. The first video I saw left a lot to be desired on the groove subject. Nice licks, but not much locking in with the drums.

Bassists have to be able to have the abilty to fill that space between guitar and drums, that is the job of the bass player. I have not seen much from her on this subject.

I will keep an eye on her though. From these videos it certainly appears she can play, and she has a lot of years ahead of her to get better, but at this point there are a great number of other guys who can play as well or better than her. The only difference is they are not as easy on the eyes.

That is definitely her most interesting feature. Almost never do we see a good female bassist. The bass is pretty big and heavy, and she isn't, so I think that is why she is sitting a lot of the time. It's kind of a novelty act, like when a kid can play really well, but not as well as the grown-ups. If I wanted to really figure out her prospects for major stardom, I'd listen to her CD because she wrote and arranged everything on it. If she is good at writing and arranging, her playing will follow.

About guitarists becoming bassists: I've been playing sometimes with a bassist who used to be a saxophonist. He would play sax solo or with a single accompanyist. When he plays the bass, it's way too many notes all over the place. The groove is secondary. It's pretty annoying for me, the guitarist, because I'm the one who's supposed to play too many notes!

On the first video below, she's shown doing her bass solo with a drummer. I think she really nails it here and there, but she seems out of time occasionally too. My guess is that she'll be really amazing in 5 years, but we'll see.

A friend of mine just ran across these videos of this 21-year-old female bassist named Tal Wilkenfeld:
