As usual, you mock that which you do become.

So we have been watching a fair bit of The Office recently (we were
given the UK version on DVD and got hooked, then watched the US
version on Netflix). NBC is now streaming this, among other shows, for
free on their website. This beats trying to watch the thing at 9 PM on
Thursdays, so we gave it a whirl last weekend. The good news is that
the video quality is certainly acceptable; better than DVD but not
quite HD. The bad news is not that they have commercials at all
(somebody's gotta pay the bills) but that they only had the *same*
three commercials throughout the episodes we watched. It got to be
numbing. I shall never get DirecTV, nor shall I have anything to do
with cars.com. I'm sure I've built up a tolerance to the third thing,
which I can't even remember.

Obviously, this is not (quite) the way that TV will be delivered in
the future, but I give NBC a couple of bonus points for trying to do
something. We don't get cable because our over-the-air HD stations are
pretty good, but there are a few shows we do miss. Not enough to pay
money for them, but probably enough to watch ads. I'm willing to bet
there are millions of families like ours who could make some kind of a
la carte system work one way or another, but it will take a while to
happen and probably does take something like network neutrality. So
I'm not holding my breath.
