They certainly make use of it in Europe and Asia. I've often thought the American self-indulgent and perhaps overly independent belief that they have to take their own car everywhere and that it needs must be their primary mode of transportation. Yes, a lot of that is the lack of infrastructure and the fact that with so much space and resources there was no impetus to use higher density systems like light rail... But still. If we'd pushed for it, it might have a larger presence shared with what we have now.... it certainly would not leave us in this situation where we are paying a lot more for fuel than we have come to expect to pay and not really have any alternatives to just continuing as is and paying the extra fuel costs.

1. Cost. It took a long time and a big budget push to simply get I-70 *re-surfaced,* let alone actually improved. Putting in a train system will be FAR more expensive than getting I-70 to six or even 8 lanes.

2. Demand. I'd be willing to bet that the number of people who use I-70 to go between St. Louis-Columbia, STL-KC, or Columbia-KC is far less than the number that get on and off at other spots OR simply drive through the state on I-70 and wouldn't be able to use the train for much.

You'd be surprised. Or at least I really think that you would be. People here were very surprised by how well the light rail was used. Actual use far outstripped predicted use.
